Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically composed of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opponent’s basketball hoop. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground at each end. The main objective of basketball is to score more points than the opposing team by making field goals, worth two or three points, and free throws, worth one point.

Players can move the ball toward the hoop by dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) or passing to teammates. The sport emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and skill, with various playing positions including guards, forwards, and centers, each with distinct roles and responsibilities. Basketball can be played indoors or outdoors and is governed by rules that dictate gameplay, including fouls, traveling, and shot clock limitations.

It originated in the United States in the late 19th century and has since become a globally popular sport, known for its fast pace and high-scoring games. Major competitions include professional leagues like the NBA, international tournaments, and collegiate championships.
